Large landslide in Gansu Zhouqu August 7

two-thirds of Zhouqu county has been flooded

August 15 was a national day of mourning

At 22 pm August 7, 2010, Zhouqu County of Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture met with heavy rain. Luo Jiayu and San Yanyu, located in the north county, started debris flow rushing to the south county and destroying so many houses along the road. Up to August 18, the landslide has caused 1287 killed and 457 missing.

According to the report from CCTV, two-thirds of Zhouqu county has been flooded. two-thirds of Zhouqu encountered power interruption. Part of 313 Provincial Highway, 210 Provincial Highway were also damaged.

At 10 o’clock on the August 14, 2010, China’s State Council announced that August 15 would be a national day of mourning. Hu Jintao, together with people of all nationalities showed the deep condolences to victims of Large landslide in Gansu Zhouqu August 7.

Zhao Zhongxiang come back to CCTV after two years' retirement

Zhao Zhongxiang, a well-known Chinese host, was born in 1942 in Heibei Province. Zhao Zhongxiang has worked for 40 years in China Central Television (CCTV), serving as commentator for news, features, and other kinds of important programs, such as Spring Festival Gala Evening. He was also a member of the CPPCC National Committee, executive director of China Wildlife Conservation Association and executive director of China Environmental Science Society.

Since July 12, 2010, Zhao Zhongxiang reappeared in CCTV broadcasting the Animal World and man and nature with Zhu Xun (A female host of CCTV) as his partner after he retired for two years. Besides, Zhao also has another program, and that is to dub for World Expo legendary. 68-year-old Zhao Zhongxiang’s coming back to CCTV again has attracted a lot of controversy. Some said that Zhao should step aside to leave more chances to the youngers, while some still suppot him  because they had been accustomed to Zhao’s hosting style and his familiar voice.

Three Gorges Dam will meet the first large-scale flood since being completed

According to the real-time data from Three Gorges Dam control center, at 8 PM in July 19 the water inflow of Three Gorges Dam has rised to 69,000 cubic meters per second and the water outflow of Gezhouba has rised to 41,300 cubic meters per second. At 9 PM in July 19, the upper water level of Three Gorges Dam was of 148.21-meter high and the water level of Gezhouba was of 51.8-meter high.

Chen Fei, general manager of China Yangtze River Three Gorges Project Corporation, said that Three Gorges Dam would reach a flood peak of 70,000 cubic meters per second exceeding the peak in 1998, which is the first large-scale flood it have met since Three Gorges Dam has been completed.
