Chinese Festival: Laba Rice Porridge Festival (Laba Festival)
The twelfth lunar month every year is known as “La Yue (腊月)”, and the eighth day of the “La Yue” is Laba Festival. Laba Festival has a long history and tradition in China, and to eat laba rice porridge is considered as a big thing throughout the country. Origin of Laba Festival
The most significant festival of “La Yue” is Laba Festival which used to be called “La Ri (腊日)”. Laba Festival was originally used to worship ancestors and gods, pray for good harvest and good fortune. It is said that Sakyamuni, founder of Buddhism, got his Buddha permission also in December eighth day, so Laba festival is also known as “buddha in road festival”.

1) Offer sacrifices
Offering sacrifices has been popular in the past until In the Ming and Qing Dynasties. All traditional customs, such as offering sacrifices, worshiping ancestors and driving epidemic, were slowly replaced by worshiping God and Buddha.
2) Eat ice block
The day before Laba Festival, people usually fill steel pots with water until it is frozen. On the “La Ri”, people knocked the ice into pieces and eat them. It is said that the day’s ice is very magical, eat it and you’ll never get a stomach-ache in the next year.
3) Eat laba rice porridge
Eating laba rice porridge has a-thousand-year history. People start to prepare to cook rice in seventh day of the twelfth lunar month. After having washed rice, foamed fruit, peeled, time to cook. Now supermarkets have presented the laba porridge with raw materials, but you can also choose laba porridge ingredients according to your own eating habits and physical condition.
4) Foam laba garlic
Chinese New Year day is drawing near, and the festive atmosphere is getting more and stronger. People used to foam garlic with vinegar this day, called “Laba garlic.”
5) Sun laba tofu
“Laba tofu” is a folk specialty which is most popular in Anhui. On Laba Festival, Each and every family has a custom of sunning tofu called “Laba tofu”.
6) Laba noodles
In northern China, people don’t eat Laba rice porridge while eat Laba Noodles.
